Subaru's venerable Impreza is ready for a refresh, and here's what a five-door version might look like.

The Subaru Impreza 5-Door Concept is an accurate preview of what the all-new Impreza will look like.

The concept car concept is translated as "the idea of a car". This is a kind of prototype car, which tests people's reactions to new technologies being introduced, design solutions, etc. In its original form, prototypes are never launched into mass production.

Though the rear overhangs are short, the rear doors are massive, tucking well back into the rear fenders. With the Legacy sedan and Outback wagon just refreshed for the model year, the next new Subaru is likely to be a seven-seat larger crossover utility vehicle, followed by the new Impreza. The Subaru Impreza 5-Door Concept - This Is What We Know

The Tokyo Motor Show is a mayhem for strange concept cars and production cars looking like they are made as movie props or represent the mobility of the extraterrestrials. However, in the sheer vastness of strangeness, in one corner of the large exhibition center, Subaru was doing their thing.

Smaller, yet, slightly more important Impreza 5-Door Concept was the start and the most important piece of hardware on the Subaru stand. Representing the production model slated for late unveiling as the Subaru Impreza, the 5-Door Concept courageously presented us with a new design language Subaru will use for all cars from now on. Interplay of bends and creases on the front looks a bit like an overkill, but the car as a whole is quite sleek and elegant.

We can see the lights, front bumper, wheels and raised rear doors changed for the premiere, but the design concept will stay the same. The rear of the concept car is far less controversial. Classic Subaru tone goes through. We would not be surprised if we see it like this in its production guise.

Subaru will employ it from now on all their cars. Actually, the car is half of an inch shorter than the current hatch, but than again, it is still quite large for a hatch. Only two inches shorter than the Audi A3 Sedan, the Subaru 5-Door Concept shows it will feature a roomy cabin created over the inch wheelbase. We have no doubt that the dimensions will stay much the same.

Unfortunately, Subaru did not reveal much keeping all the important stuff still under wraps. Regardless, we can be sure, the car will receive some sort of modern boxer engine, a CVT transmission and definitely a Symmetrical all-wheel drive. Although, after the Impreza and the WRX part their ways, the new 5-Door Impreza could come with the front wheel drive option as well. Subaru did not introduce a lot of two wheel drive cars, but new winds are gusting through the company after their huge success in the US.

It is quite possible we are about to witness something unexpected with this car. Too much secrecy is involved here. Apart from unveiling the new car, Subaru officials reported during the press briefing that an autonomous drive is in the works. Not that anyone was totally surprised. The whole industry is moving towards that and Subaru is following the suit.

I do not have spare time. All there is is car time. I am a Central European gearhead, but you are probably thinking - aaa a disposable Borg drone! Well, actually, I like to dress up like James Bond too.
