Fiat also provides a shelf, which you can set at two different heights or remove completely, depending on what you want to carry. And there's a long, thin, umbrella-shaped pouch which you can also take out and carry with you. With both gone, if you fold the rear seats forward, you get a huge, flat load space.

And doing so is marvellously easy - you just pull a catch, and the spring-loaded seats tumble forward and out of the way by themselves. Both rear and front-seat passengers get oodles of space. And with the high seating position and wide door apertures, the L is a very easy car to get in and out of. T he way the L rides bumps and ruts left us in something of a quandary.

But for that same reason, the L lollops into larger ruts, which causes the car to rock and pitch uncomfortably. You also feel quite a lot of engine vibration through the steering wheel and pedals. Combined with the tendency for road surface vibrations to find their way through at high speed, that can make the L wearing to drive long distances. Then there's the rear seats, which are quite flat and firm. We suspect that would cause passengers to feel achy after any length of time spent in them.

There are lots of soft, curvy shapes, and the dials, with their red-tipped needles and stylish fonts, are also rather appealing. And while the rotary controllers for the heating and ventilation are fine, the buttons between them are fiddly. The fact that the panel is positioned so low down that it feels like it's pointing at the floor doesn't help. For starters, the soft suspension causes the L to lean over disconcertingly when you go through a corner.

You also have to put up with numb steering. And when you accelerate hard around a bend in a L, it rocks back on its haunches, causing the front end to lift up and lose both grip and traction. The L is too new to have figured in the annual JD Power customer satisfaction survey. The only saving grace is that Fiat as a whole scores relatively well in the Warranty Direct Reliability Index, which is based on warranty claims.

It lasts for three years, but only the first two years of that are covered by the manufacturer. It scored the full five stars, and got a high score for adult occupant protection. And pedestrian protection was rated about average for the class. Even the entry-level Pop model comes with six airbags, as well as a whole host of safety systems which help prevent skids in turns and under braking, stop the car rolling back during a hill start, and distribute the force of your braking evenly between the wheels.

To get air conditioning as standard, though, you have to upgrade to the Pop Star spec, which also gets you alloy wheels, electrically-adjustable wing mirrors and cruise control. Go up another level to the Lounge, and you get dual-zone climate control, automatic headlamps and wipers, front fog lamps, and a panoramic glass roof.

The Trekking version eschews the glass roof for its raised ride height, and it also gets a rear arm rest, a chunky off-road-inspired body kit, and mud-and-snow tyres. I f you are buying a L, be sure to have a browse of the options list. There are some unusual extras available, some of which are reasonably priced — you can even get a coffee machine installed in the front arm rest! But if you don't mind owning something that's less quirky to look at, there are plenty of alternatives which are just as practical, more enjoyable to drive and better value for money.
